Bill Watterson practices what he preaches on this one. No e-mail, limited fax and other contact, limited phone - he’s one of the hardest people in the business to contact or work with.

It’s a distinct possibility.

There is a documentary about Mr. Watterson (“Dear Mr. Watterson”) that is great. It used to be available on Netflix, but I am not sure about that any more. As a huge C&H fan, I highly recommend it. Lots of great celebrity cameos talking about how much of an influence he was on their childhood.

Is Watterson in it? He’s famously reclusive.

You know, I don’t recall if he makes an appearance. My recollection is that the doc is more about him and the impact C&H had on various comedians, artists, cartoonists, etc. I remember specifically that there is a lot of discussion about his full-color full-page Sunday strips (included in the C&H books) and how they really were above and beyond what anyone else was doing artistically in comics at the time.

Yes, he famously changed the format of his Sunday strips to force the papers to print them in their entirety. In the late-80s, I read Calvin every day in the Washington Post. It was my favorite part of the paper. In a way, it helped me prepare for parenthood. And it still helps.

XKCD has a good (opposite) take on this as well:

If he wants a way to do things less efficiently, he’ll love the internet. The vast time-suck that is the modern web (which occasionally seems to consist mostly of ignorant people arguing with other ignorant people passionately about subjects that are not in the least important to the vast majority of mankind) could quite possibly be the biggest setback to efficiency ever.

A simple search for a specific topic is likely to result in millions of pages of non-relevant or duplicate information put out there simply for page views. And don’t forget about the sheer amount of click-bait stuff.

I have more to say about this, but at this point I’d rather just fax you my manifesto. If I had Watterson’s ability and (I very much hope) financial security (because if he’s not wealthy we should all chip in to a kickstarter to make him so) I’d be hiding out in trout streams for the rest of my time alive communicating solely with the outside world by carrier pigeon (and oppo posts).

Since Watterson has staunchly refused to license anything to do with C&H, it’s hard to know how much money he has. But he has sold lots of books, and continues to do so.

But yes, the Internet is the world’s largest time suck. I end up sitting here for hours, typing away and feeling busy without actually getting anything accomplished.

I watched that. For a documentary that doesn’t actually feature its subject, it was really good.

Yet another piece of genius. That’s why I have this:

He isn’t, but for a documentary that doesn’t actually feature its subject it’s well worth the watch for a fan.

Hard or soft cover? I think I just found my next birthday present.

The books are soft cover, but are beautifully produced on heavy paper and include written insight from Watterson himself telling the story of the strip throughout its run. Very, very cool. It was a birthday present for myself as well.
